See the Events Calendar for distributions dates.
When picking up a share, members must check-in. Checking in involves finding your share name on the list. Shares are listed under the primary member. Every share type (Veg/Fruit/Egg/Flower) has its own list; Members must check-in for every share they have purchased. Volunteers will be running each of the 4 lists; 2 Core members will be on hand in order to help trouble shoot and facilitate. It is important if a member has a problem or question at distribution that they bring it immediately to the attention of a Core member @ distribution.
Members will provide their own bags. In general, members will be picking up at least 10-15 types of things, which usually amounts to several bags (especially if you don’t want to smash some of the more precious items). There will also be items like the Mesclun Salad mix, spinach, and arugula that will need to be bagged individually in a Ziploc-type bag. Members will be bringing all of their own bags!! Everyone has there own style; typically members bring big canvas bags or baskets in order to carry everything comfortably, using their own recycled plastic bags in order to separate items. It is important that members explain this important feature of the CSA to their friends who pick up for them (There is nothing sadder than an uninformed friend who has to scrounge around for bags…). It is the member’s responsibility to read the weekly email that details the expected produce types and amounts and plan their “bag strategy” accordingly.
Members will select their own produce. Distribution is organized by item. Each item is in a crate; crates will be stacked in orderly piles and will be marked with a sign that will tell the member the amount that they should take. Members are free to peruse the produce, selecting the size/style of each vegetable that they prefer. (For example, the farm often gives members a large range of size selection, allowing members to decide if they want 3 giant zukes—in order to make a serious amount of ratatouille—or 3 small zukes–because they like the heavy dose of sweetness associated with smaller veggies. Other items like peppers usually involve a bunch of color choices.) Members are to take ONLY the amounts listed on the share sign, remembering (despite their personal distaste for certain items) that the CSA receives a fixed amount from the farmers, based on the number of members. It’s important that no one takes more than their share or changes the amounts of items taken based on personal preferences, so that other members will not be deprived of some of their veggies. Members may trade parts of their shares with other items in the “swap box”—but otherwise reconfiguring the share is not permitted.
